Our School Activities
Green Schools
Promoting long-term, whole-school action for the environment Green-Schools is a student led programme with involvement from the wider community. In Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa we have been awarded our flags in 5 areas including Litter & Waste, Energy, Water, Travel & Biodiversity. We are currently working towards our 6th Flag, Global Citizenship-Litter & Waste.
Active School Flag
ASF is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan. The ASF initiative provides schools with a framework to guide, support and incentivise them to work towards achieving a physically educated and physically active school community. From January we will be working at reactivating the Flag we received in 2015 as we hope three of our classes will go swimming in the Water School as well as continuing our Football skills and Zumba classes as in previous years. Forest School
“An inspirational process that offers children, young people and adults regular opportunities to achieve, and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment” Forest Education Initiative (2005).
In Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa 3rd class children have been involved in a 6 week programme with local forest school facilitators Rita and Maureen in Dunboy woods. The children have learned all about the woodland habitat and had practical experience of improving their teamwork, problem solving and environmental knowledge through fort building and trust walks.
Sciath na Scol
Sciath na Scol is a schools based organisation which organises Gaelic games in the primary schools of Cork city and county. There are over 400 schools affiliated in the various codes, catering for 7,000 children annually. It is a big part of our school year in Scoil An Chroí Ro Naofa and is always much anticipated. In 2019 both our girls and boys teams made it to the finals and there was plenty to celebrate when both brought home their cups!
SPHE
We at Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa believe in the holistic development of all children. We hope to start preparations for the Amber Flag in the coming terms. This flag focuses on the well being of the whole school community and we hope it will enhance our SPHE curriculum. As part of this curriculum all classes complete the Stay Safe Programme while the Senior Classes also follow the Weaving Well Being Guidelines and the Junior Classes complete social skills activities from Friends First.
Music
Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa provides a holistic musical education to our pupils. Children of all abilities are catered for. In the classroom the children follow “The Right Note” music programme. Every child in the school also performs in annual Christmas concerts and shows. Children from 2nd class up learn the tin whistle in class. The school has a selection of musical instruments and children in Rang 4 have lessons with a music teacher to learn the basics of an instrument of their choice. We enjoy annual visits from instrumentalists from outside the school to perform for the children and to introduce them to different musical genres.
